Chichester Gardens Cottage,
The inaugural Chichester Gardens OctoberFest will be Wednesday 13th October
2010.
Chichester Gardens was the site of Adelaide's First vineyard planted by John Barton Hack, Governor Hindmarsh declared "The grapes are excellent" This land covered 12 town acres.
In 1839 J B Hack subdivided Chichester Gardens into 228 lots which were served by three new streets known as Sussex Street, and East and West Pallant Streets in memory of the English region from where J B Hack had emigrated.
When Hack became bankrupt and was forced to sell his properties, this location became Adelaide's largest subdivision of small blocks on which modest houses were built.
"Chichester Gardens" attracted immigrants predominately of German and Irish nationality which created the village atmosphere which still exists today.

This house is significant as being representative of an early residence in 'Chichester Gardens Estate'.
Kentish Arms Hotel, established in 1848 by John Cocker.
It stands on the North East corner of 'Chichester Gardens Estate'.
Kentish Arms Hotel. At the corner of East Pallant and Stanley Streets, this two-storey arched masonry verandah gives this second
hotel a distinctive character.
The scale and style demonstrates the increased desirability of this area and the continuous importance of corner hotels and shops to residential communities of the nineteenth century.
It also played
its part in the state's sporting history. Publican John Cocker was a
handy bowler
in Kent before he took up the Licence here in 1848, and so he founded the
Kent and Sussex Cricket Club at the pub, with its cricket ground out the
front where
exclusive Mann Terrace meets the parklands. He was entrusted with the first
wicket at the Adelaide Oval in 1872
"Stanley Street Stroll", is incorporated in a booklet available through the tourist information centre in Rundle Mall the booklet is called
"Historical Walking Trails" .
In the centre of that publication is "Stanley Street Stroll" , it includes 35 listed heritage properties and is printed by the Adelaide City Council.
It incorporates "Chichester Gardens" Adelaide's oldest subdivision and includes Adelaide's oldest house.

Stanley Street Stroll - includes

Dominating Stanley Street as one of the most impressively located mansions in
Adelaide, it was designed by by James Mac George as his own home in 1862.
The western wing was added in 1881 when David Murray, successful merchant, lived here. Constructed of local limestone with dressings strongly picked out in well detailed brickwork.
The design incorporates unusual architectural features such as pilasters to openings and the French mansard roof. The property has extensive views of the City of Adelaide and surrounding Adelaide Hills.
One of the most prominent townscape features of Adelaide, the church was once described as a "resort for enquiring minds".
The Classical style church, which was designed by E Wright and E Hamilton in 1860 as a result of a design competition, is one of the most substantial buildings erected in South Australia as a place of worship for a non-conformist denomination.
Opened in February 1861. It was another 10 years before the 107ft tower was added
