Jeffrey Wheare
Spoke to the North Adelaide Society on Tuesday
19/10/10. Here are the
highlights of that address;
I
am Lord Mayor
candidate – Jeffrey Wheare.
I
am standing for Heritage, Adelaide, and Tourism and in particular for
North Adelaide.
Development
and Heritage can and should co-exist.
Not
just façade-ism as it is at the former Balfours factory.
In
Victoria Square a couple of years ago stood the magnificent old MTT
building very similar to the nearby Torrens Building it was demolished to
make way for an office tower.
If
the tower had been built as apartments then the old MTT building could
have been retained for shops attracting shoppers - and - it would have
increased the population in the central market region.
·
I stand
for development but not at the loss of our heritage. Developments of a
high standard catering for all income levels.
·
I stand
for increased city population and believe the population could comfortably
be doubled to around 40,000.
It
concerns me that heritage has little or no value to the government.
·
At
the Le Cornu site every piece of heritage has gone! It is “Ground Zero”
·
The
Historic Adelaide Oval has no value to the Government! There is a petition
going around to prevent further development. I WISH IT WELL and I have
signed that petition and I urge all to sign.
·
Personally,
I believe the all weather stadium was Adelaide’s best option if Adelaide
wants to put up another bid for the Commonwealth Games. And the Royal
Adelaide Hospital should stay where Colonel Light put it in the North East
Corner of Adelaide.
·
When
is the last time any of you travelled on the “H” class heritage trams?
They have not carried passengers in Adelaide since construction began the
‘South Road Overpass’ many months ago. I say they should run every
weekday in Adelaide as the shuttle tram between South Terrace and West
Terrace.
·
If
it wasn’t for the reliability of the old “H’ Class trams there would
not have been a tramline to extend.
It
concerns me both the Adelaide Council and the Government neglects North
Adelaide.
·
When
the Government extended the tramline 'North Adelaide' was not
considered
WHY?
Instead it went to Thebarton!
·
Every
Tourist Attraction is over the river.
Tour Down Under, WOMAdelaide Adelaide Festival of
Arts including Fringe City and Clipsal 500.
·
Residential
North Adelaide does not want the Clipsal 500 roaring around its streets
BUT why could not the Fringe be in North Adelaide and the Adelaide
Festival over the river uniting Adelaide?
·
I
recently conducted the inaugural ‘OctoberFest’
in Chichester Gardens ADELAIDE’S
FIRST SUBDIVISION it was well received and I believe that
should become an annual event organized by the Adelaide City Council.
Guided tours around our heritage and promoting our restaurants and
businesses in North Adelaide.
·
The
tram should extend to North Adelaide and terminate at the parklands.
·
I
am opposed to parking on the parklands but would support underground car
parks in the parklands.
Finally,
I believe there will need to be compromises between Council and The State
Government BUT I strongly believe residential North Adelaide should remain
the sole responsibility of Adelaide City Council.
We do not want any Major Developments in North
Adelaide.
How many here support what is happening at the Le
Cornu site? How many here are opposed to that Major Development in the
Hart of North Adelaide?
·
If
elected I will have to make compromises because I believe Council and
Government need to work together. BUT I will always put a strong case for
Adelaide.
·
I
believe the Adelaide Oval should not be further developed and that an all
weather stadium would be a benefit to Adelaide in any bid for the
Commonwealth Games. But I will probably have to compromise.
·
I
believe the Royal Adelaide Hospital should stay where Colonel Light wanted
it. But I will probably have to compromise.
I
urge all “PLEASE VOTE!”
Please
vote for a Council that will work for YOU.
I
believe a united Council will effectively have a more powerful message
when dealing with local issues and be more convincing to the Government
when it comes to planning and its guidelines and local maters.
Have
the Guidelines set down by Government with respect to the Le Cornu
site fit the Adelaide Plan? Should development in Adelaide abide by the
‘Adelaide Plan’?
I
ask PLEASE
